As if having a professional clown[1] for a president wasn't bad enough, it has recently been reported that Donald Trump might raise the price of comic books[2].

For years, DC Comics has been using Canadian companies to print their comics[3]. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement, US companies were able to import those comics duty free[4]. Given the quality of most mainstream comics today[5], this has effectively become the equivalent of the US taking in Canada's toxic waste for free, so you can see why Trump would want to stop this in order to make America great again.

Trump's protectionist objectives call for rolling back NAFTA[6] and raising tariffs of up to 10% on all imports[7], including presumably comic books. Because if there's anything that helps stimulate the economy, it's stifling imports[8].

Assuming DC continues their current practice of printing in Canada, they'd pay more to get them to consumers. Something tells me they'd just pass that cost increase on to us[9]. In 2016, new comics already averaged $3.89 per issue[10]. By 2018, a single book could cost more than a Big Mac[11]. If Americans are forced to choose between comics and Big Macs, we might be looking at the end of an industry[12]. Should that happen, we can be sure that Trump won't notice. He doesn't read[13].

But I guess I shouldn't complain. Who needs comic books when your president is a living caricature[14]?

Yesterday, Newsarama.com ran an article titled 10 Things You Might Not Know About Superman. Newsarama.com is a website that is almost exclusively devoted to comic books. So who the hell is reading Newsarama that doesn't know that Superman is a super-ventriloquist capable of changing his voice to aid his disguise as Clark Kent?

Alec Baldwin is The Mimic!

I'm not saying that I'm surprised that there are people out there who are unaware of the complete set of Superman's god-like powers. (His hair is super absorbent! He doesn't need to breathe for years at a time! He can never die!) I'm just saying that those people don't read comic book websites.

No one who visits the HuffingtonPost.com is unaware that Barrack Obama is the second coming of Stalin. And no one wanders into PerezHilton.com without first knowing that Lady Gaga is secretly a man. I'd expect that sort of journalism from, say, USAtoday, which makes no pretense about pandering only to people attracted to bright colors and a 3rd grade vocabulary.

If you are desperate to enlighten the nerdy masses about Superman, Newsarama, may I suggest devoting an entire month to the Man of Steel? Sure it reduces your readership drastically, but does anyone really want any readers who don't adore Superman?

Telephone calls, men named Joe, plaid suits! Action Comics is excitement on every panel!

No. No they don't.

For the first time in a year, I drop in at Newsarama.com to see if I can find any information on the rumored upcoming Booster Gold comic book series, and I immediately stumble into a major spoiler for the final issue of 52. I'm so pissed off right now. Who the hell posts major spoilers the week after a book comes out without alerting the reader that there are spoilers ahead? What kind of world do we live in where the endings of all stories have to be given away at all times? Well, screw you, Newsarama. Hank Hall is Monarch! Soylent Green is people! Maggie Simpson shot Mr. Burns! And Darth Vader is Luke's father, you jerks. Take that!
